What Is the Visual Element of Line?
Coloring outside the lines is a fine art. ~Kim Nance

Line is a mark with greater length than width.
Artists use line to suggest movement and create emphasis. These lines fall into the three categories of horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Horizontal lines appear calm. They are like a man sleeping; they have a strong sense of stability but are static and have little movement.
Vertical lines seem assertive, or denote growth & strength Imagine a vertical line as a person standing up alert. They are not going anywhere but are standing up. It is also static and does not move.
Artists know that the diagonal line almost always implies motion and conveys the most movement. They are like a man moving. Diagonal lines are the most dramatic and imply action.
Too much of one kind of line in a drawing is uninteresting.

Know 3 Line Types
Outline and Contour Lines
Contour means "outline", and presents exterior edges of objects. A plain contour has a clean, connected line, no shading and emphasizes an open "shell" of the subject. More complex contours can imply shading values through interior outlines.
Othonagal Lines
Lines to create perspective and create a vanishing point in perspective.
Implied Line
Just as both outlines and contour lines are needed in creating art, implied lines are also quite necessary. They are lines that aren't actually drawn but seem to connect points of emphasis in a work. Implied line is the imagined line created by the eye usually to straighten out or simplify chaotic line or to complete broken lines. Implied line can be done by pointing, over there! The eye-line and figural movement indicate movement and emphasis in a composition. Illustrate this phenomenon by pointing at something in the classroom without saying a word. Student will automatically turn to see what you're pointing at.
